Les peuples de la nation algonquine anishinaabe vivent sur ce territoire depuis des millénaires, gérant la terre, l'eau et tout ce qui contribue à la vie dans cette région.  Aujourd'hui, de nombreuses communautés autochtones continuent de se voir refuser la possibilité et les ressources nécessaires pour créer et vivre leur art traditionnel sur ce territoire.
