CULTURAL VENUE RECOVERY PROJECT

FUNDED BY

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Cultural Venue Recovery Project was aimed to build community capacity in non-City owned community arts and culture venues by offering access to interior air quality (IAQ) site surveys completed by Bouthillette Parizeau (BPA) engineering firm. This project was launched in 2021 in order to facilitate the re-opening of cultural spaces after the first covid-19 lockdown. It culminated in a report that helped venue owners, cultural centers and event producers assess risk in their venues. However, it is important that all artists and patrons of the arts develop literacy in IAQ as our arts and culture sector reopens to advocate for their safety and assess risk. This report also serves these individuals.

The 5 jury-selected venues studied are La Nouvelle Scène, The Gladstone Theater, The Bronson Center, Live on Elgin, and Studio Space Ottawa. All representing a range of different artistic practices, as well as being of differing sizes, capacities, and operating models. Through these 5 site surveys, the engineers created the following general report that features recommendations of improvements that could be made to HVAC systems in cultural spaces to mitigate COVID risks.

We acknowledge that our offices are on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. The peoples of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation have lived on this territory for millennia, stewarding the land, the water and all that contributes to life in this region.  Today, many Indigenous communities continue to be denied the opportunity and resources to make and experience their traditional art on this land. We pledge to make justice and reconciliation a priority through our work by amplifying Indigenous voices and their experiences.
